Of God, Rain and Corn on the Cob

"...ooh now i wish it would rain
now, down on me....
- Phil Collins & Eric Clapton

Every morning, as soon as I open my eyes, whether sluggishly or smartly, the first seven words I utter are "Thank You Jesus for one more day"

I am happy to mention that this is the only habit/ritual/undertaking that has been consistent in my life. I'm afraid I dont have a track record for consistency ...lol.
I read at QOMC that she does this as well, it's what spurred me to put this up. I recommend this for all of u peeps, it's a good way to start the day.
*************************************************

It's rainy season again!

I like it when it rains at night and i wake up to that serenity and cool that only an overnight rain can bring. That feeling that the whole earth has been washed clean while I slept, but that's not my favorite part...

I love that heady scent that fills the air when the clouds are heavy, full and darkly hued causing the earth to send out its pheromones thirstily in lusty anticipation. That wonderful natural fragrance that infiltrates the air as the first few drops of rain are greedily soaked up...

It's my aspiration to capture and bottle this fragrance, name it L'eau d'earth (or something...lol) because I have yet to encounter a perfume that's even marginally close to this heavily intoxicating, cleansing yet seductive smell.

I inhale deeply once i catch the slightest whiff of it, hoping to get enough of it in my system before it fades...

The other product of this wet season that excites me is CORN! Yes, Corn on the Cob.

I had my first corn this season three days after my birthday, memorable experience. You see, the selection and eating of corn is a ritual for me. Let me describe it the best I can (might be long)...

...the smell of ready-to-eat Corn cooking on the fire invades my room from the Kitchen and I stand up (usually from my supine postion on my bed) as though in a trance and head straight for the pot in the kitchen. Standing in front of the cooker, I open the pot ever so carefully and stare at the array of corn like an antique lover at a yard sale, I stare until i find IT!

IT is the perfect corn. IT has to be the right length, the right size and the perfect arrangement. IT has to be white or whatever the lightest shade of corn is and preferably slim. There's a saying where I come from that describes perfect teeth as looking like well-cooked corn...lol, I find it very true.

IT should have several straight rows on its cob, not a grain missing, discoloured or crooked. The rows must taper in reducing sizes to the both ends of the cob. When I find this perfect work of nature, I carefully lift it out and look around again, just in case there's more, then i place IT/them in a bowl half-filled with cool, salted water for a few seconds (as i dont particularly like hot food). Once it's cool enough, I arrange IT/them on a plate, slather with butter, return to my room, lie down on my flat belly with a novel or a movie and proceed to devour IT.

That's not all, once there is no longer any grain left on the cob, I suck the cob till there's almost no juice left in it, then chew the soft part of the cob till it's dry, spit out the whatchumacallits, only then will i be satisfied.

P.S.

I will eat roasted corn only when it is sweet corn covered in BBQ sauce and slightly barbequed or roasted.

phew! there is the update i've been too lazy to put up.

I still cant highlight, italicize, or change colours on my blog! somebody help me!

Ah... an update. How're you sweetie. I love corn too, but prefer roasted. I'll have agbado yiyan with agbon (coconut) or epa (peanuts). When I'm in Lagos, always make sure I get a taste of it. I'm very traditional with my naija snacks, that's why I prefer agbon or peanuts to butter.

Kinda 'sensual' post... aroma(-tic) earthy, heady, yummy... real.

I am sooooo with you in regards to loving the scent of the air just before a rain. The atmosphere is unusually calming and relaxing just before a storm. I like to stand outside and let the gusts of wind seduce and surround me as they will. Pure bliss.

Yeah, not a huge fan of corn, but your vivid description had me hungry for some. LOL

point.

Your descriptions of the heady scent of rain, which hasn't yet been found in any perfume, almost made me stick my head out of the window to smell the after-torrents (it rained cats and dogs yesterday where I'm at).

Your description of corn on a COB made me really hungry...lollll. I love the way u write. Hmmm...I'm getting addicted...

You can do an excellent description of a scenario in a novel (e.g of rain, summer, spring, fall, or the atmosphere in general...and of food...lolll). :)

ps: I cannot even underestimate giving praise to God after rising up to the morning rays! We don't own our lives...He gives us renewed bouts of oxygen each morning...:)

Used to chew the cob too when I was a kid, don’t do it any longer.
Two other things I love during rainy season is boiled groundnuts and mangoes.

I hate to wake up to the sound rain and that lovely smell you describe when I have to get to WORK!

Your corn lust is something I totally share. It is fantastic.
However, corn with BBQ sauce is what I find strange. Never tried it. Doesn't even sound nice. Am I wrong?

Rain and Corn.

Let me start with rain. I hate it! rain drives me nuts. did a post on how i feel about the rains earlier in the year. I don't like anything about the rainy season except maybe the change of clothes.

Corn. ah well much better. I am not like a big fan but depending on my mood I could have some. I prefer the boiled to the roasted.

I enjoyed reading the description of how they both make you feel though...L'eau d'earth..that's cool

uNWrItten* said...

hey babe....this kin ode to the corn..lol
i love corn too sha..infact i think im bout to go eat some now sef...how far with u now?...

Parakeet said...

I hate when it rains in London. Nothing works and they've said June is set to be a very rainy month. Not nice. I love corn on the cobs too, my favorite fruit after mango. Abi na vegetable? Who knows.

Nine said...

Lady, you just can't eat corn right without african pear otherwise known as ube.Oh,and good roast corn beats good boiled corn anyday.Thing is,roast corn is easier to eff up....Hold up,we are talking about corn right?Right?

Enjoy the smell of the rain sha.Soon enough you'll have to wade through the floods.Lol.

Smaragd said...

TOBENNA, that's why i said i love it when it's rained during the night.

as per the corn, it has to be SWEET corn (u can get it at shoprite) with BBQ sauce. when u've tried it out, u're free to come back and either scold me or thank me...

MZ DEE, thanx babe. i'll hurry the perfume plan so u can buy one too...lol

ANDY, thanx.

TAIREBABS, thanx.
Rainy season gets annoying when it's persistent and nasty, i excluded the part of my post that was about that. BUT the beginning of the season is still always beautiful.

UNWRITTEN, dear, hope u enjoyed the corn sha. i'm fine o, and u?

PARAKEET, lol! i guess it's a vegetable or is it? i've heard all about London rains, pele... Corn on the cob is just fab! am not crazy about mangoes though.

NINE, i've tried boiled corn with "ube" and coconut, verrry nice!
it'll always be boiled corn over roasted corn for me EVERYTIME! i hope not to wade by God's grace oooo....

soupasexy said...
